em derrick this is ..... AWSOME!!! UNICORN IS HUNGRY ! EVERYBODY RUN FOR YOUR LIVES ! dont stop posting cool stuff because we cant get enough of it ! thanks derrick :)
Pretty cool interview! Looking forward to Part 2...
1. I've been getting a real kick out of Season Three so far. :) Good to hear that ratings for the other two seasons were good and you guys actually didn't change anything for this season.
2. I also got a kick out of seeing Perceptor (though I admit I was hoping to hear Eiding do his voice again... :>) Wheeljack, and Mainframe. You can never have too many Geekbots around, I say! (Any chance of Animated Skids ever? I was so disappointed that Movie Skids isn't the real philosopher-bot Skids... *cough*)
3. I agree that Rumble is blue and Frenzy is red!
4. More a comment on your Twitter, but... if you guys really get to keep Primus (and Unicron) out of Animated I will be a very happy fangirl. (Ignore those fans still trying to cling to that awful Fanclub retcon...)
5. Kind of *pout* that we won't see much more of Rodimus' crew, but I think I can forgive that if we'll at least get to see more Jazz and the Jet Twins down the road. *cough* ;)
niiiiiiiiiiiice! I can now see the series finale for Animated: Sari makes Unicron some crepes and he decides to forget his life of evil and become just a regular ole' planet. Done and done. Ha ha ha, eat your heart out Marty Isenberg!
ARE we going to have anymore fembots? Even in the background? I love the lolita-looking one from your April Fools Day gift (Flip-Sides, right?) I can see her becoming like Sari's arch-enemy and they would have an epic lolita death match of death. That would be pretty awesome.
Which Galvatron? Lenard Nemoy or the Frank Welker screaming maniac that regularly abused Cyclonus, Scourge and the Sweeps?
And I agree about the Primus and Unicron thing, I kinda roll my eyes whenever Unicron appears since it generally attempts to make the Decepticons seem like a minor threat.
However, for the sake of discussion, how would you feel about Animated Quintessons since you are so adamant against Primus? I personally think the Allspark explanation is a sufficient one. Since....y'know...it doesn't exactly require a lot of work to have it make sense.
This is so how TFA season 3 will end; Unicron devours Pie Planet. I'm calling it now.
Very enjoyable read, that interview. It's so interesting to hear about the ins and outs of the cartoon business.
What's new for the DJW after Transformers Animated? Have you got some new designing gigs on the horizon, or are you stuck drawing robots for a little while longer?
Mr. Wyatt. Are you the one in charge of making the locations in TFA, such as the hall where the autobots: Ultra Magunus, Alpha Trion etc. were meeting. If so what was your inspiration for that place and will we be seeing more interesting settings on Cybertron and other locations; maybe where the Decepticons all gather?
... chibi hungry Unicron is the most adorable thing I've ever seen.
Neat interview, though! It's interesting to see your perspective on the events of S3, and some of those details like prop animation, or the origins of some characters.
The Autobot High Council Chamber was designed by Alex Diltz, and painted by Chu-Hui Song. I drew the stained glass portraits on the walls. We will see more Cybertron. bit we won't see the Decepticon off world colonies this season.
Blurr was dumped down the trash chute in The Metroplex. Metroplex is where the Autobot Civilian Government headquarters is. It is not the Elite Guard headquarters.
So, theoretically, if we get Season 4, we may focus a little more on the Decepticon side of the story? See their varying shades of gray/evil since we got to see some pretty extreme sides of the Autobots. I mean, creating a weapon of mass destruction and purposely making him very simple minded, Ultra Magnus calling for Project Safeguard and considering any non-Elite Guardsman/military bot to be "expendable", and what Yoketron said would have to be done if Project Omega failed. Personally, I love how you guys are handling the Autobots in not making them just ideal characters and giving them incredibly real choices that are often very difficult.
Thanks for the info on the council chamber, Metroplex and the Elite Guard HQ. You, Alex Diltz and Chu-Hui really made the Animated universe come alive.
You guys have made Cybertronians even more interesting by giving us a glimpse of their culture and how their society works. I hope to see more of your works. :)
Aww, that Unicron is so cute he can nom my planet any time. Well, maybe not mine. How about that one over there? No-one seems to like Pluto anyway. It needs more love.
You called the Intel office "The Metroplex". Does this mean the HQ is just a shout-out, like Tigatron Stadium, or is it an actual dormant city-bot, akin to Omega Supreme?
Also, since you have "Rodimus Prime" in your April Fools art - does this mean that the character in Transwarped is not a Prime, yet?
Great intervuiew, Mr. Wyatt! I know these guys are bombarding you with questions, lol, so I gotta take a shot and get one in myself:
Upon reading Michael Bay's recent interview on Vh1.com, he snitched and revealed that the only "fembot" in the movie, Arcee, is going to be killed rather quickly and with no preamble or pause for emotion. Bay has expressed unwillingness in the past to do things he deemed "silly". That decision has me wondering what is the consensus among the creators of Transformers about the concept of "female" Transformers? Was it just an attempt to appeal to young girls in some magical way, lol, or something else?
I love the idea of female Transformers in general. I just always have. I don't think there needs to be a reason per say. I think that when you get too realistic to the point of explaining everything, then you take all the fun out of it.
I hope that little slip about not in "this" season as a sign of hope for season 4. Unicron is kind of cute like that. Nothing like a monsterous giant that eats planets and a even greater evil force than Megatron.
How powerful is Sari? I mean, the autobots had a hard time stopping her when she was super charged by the key and Optimus thought she would actually stand a chance against Omega Supreme. That is kind of cool if she could have won.
dude, your blog and interaction with us fanboys is awesome... when i found it, i couldn't believe it existed... while i'm here (and i'm sure this has been asked.... omega supreme action figure, has anyone pitched it, or any talk around the office, ever?) seriously.. talk about having an inside line, Derrick, you are indeed awesome.
The bypasses that Ratchet wired into Sari's "circuitry" stabilized her, and lessened her power greatly. She's still tough, and can hold her own, but she's nowhere near the unstoppable force seen in Transwarped.
I can be reached through the contact link in my profile.
We have talked about an Omega Supreme toy with the guys from Hasbro on many occasions, but as to whether or not there will be one, that is a question for Hasbro. I don't have the answer.
I agree it's pretty cool to have someone who worked on the franchise we can openly geek out with over "the internets". But about who would you say Sari is on Par with in terms of how much of a fight she can put up?
Omega Supreme would be a rather awesome toy, but I'm personally waiting/hoping for a voyager sized Thundercracker(or a G1 repaint of Starscream), "Ramjet", and the Female Starscream clone, and Scrapper, Mixmaster and Dirt Boss for the Animated 'cons.
From what info and hints Hasbro's provided at convention panels, online and such, the Omega Supreme design came to their attention much later than the normal lead time required to create a toy for the series. It takes about a year from beginning to end to turn a toy idea into a physical product, so any such toy wouldn't hit shelves until late this year at the soonest, I'd guess. It'd also be a huge toy, meaning bigger development and production costs, more shelf space per item, and thus a much higher retail price. So designing one this late in the game, when it wouldn't hit shelves until after the series' end, would practically guarantee they wouldn't make back their money.
That said, there have been post-series, big-ticket releases, usually as store exclusives (e.g., Air Attack Optimus Primal). Once the focus on this summer's movie passes and they shift to TV again, who knows what could happen?
Doug, I don't think it was as much an issue of timing, since we designed many characters at the same time as (and after) Omega. It was more a matter of how many slots are available per wave of toys, And as you said, the size factor.
When it comes to the other autobots, like Sentinel Prime, Jazz, and the Jet-twins, how will they react to the half-organic bots on Earth, like Black Arachnia or even Sari? Jazz will not have a problem, I think, and the twins seem like they will think its cool, but I can imagine the freak out Sentinel will throw. I could see him even acting out violently, in fear of "contamination" or something. Maybe Sari could take him down a peg or two. Of course, BA hates herself for it anyway, so she would not argue too much with Sentinel's likely hostile attitude. She could also take him on anyway. Those two girls could double team the idiot.
It would be great to see them too. :) It would be great to see your take on them, especially after you guys turned the Decepticons into great antagonists. I'd like to see how you can make memorable characters out of them... You can build their entire civilizations.
I also like the story behind the drawings in Animated. Like the story and cybertronian culture immortalized in the tainted glass of the Cybertronian council chambers. The story behind those holo heads in the "5 servos of doom".I'm also wondering what those markings on the Allspark container are for. The story behind the "Magnus Hammer".
I wonder too if there is some sort of intergalactic trade going on.
Hot wiring is just as bad if Ratchet had to take a scalpel to Sari! D:
Watching the episode again though, he was using his electro magnets to do precision wiring work on Bumblebee's repairs, would that have been the same case for her?
I'd totally want to see Wyattized versions of the Quintessons(who are the sole purpose I will never pursue a career in field of Law) and the Vok. Speaking of the Quintessons, if you worked on Animated Sharkticons, would they look more like sharks then Piranha? Or would you keep them pretty much the same, but with big chins?
Also, I've said this before, I'd really want to see an Animated incarnation of Obsidian. I'm not saying I like him more then Strika, they always were a set to me so seeing one without the other is a little strange since they seemed to work so well together, you know mutual respect and balanced out most of eachother's shortcomings. Also, I think it'd be cool to see more Transformers that didn't have a "human shape" in robot mode and he always comes to mind along with Jetstorm(who has legs now) and Thrust(who may or may not be a Starscream repaint now).
OP said he was going to ask Ratchet to undo that. Is there any way (hypothetically) that Ratchet could set up the rewire so that Sari herself could switch it on and off? Basically, so that Sari could go all "Burning Justice!", and then switch it off when she runs out of targets.
2) Is Lugnut basically Animated Obsidian?
3) Is Sari a Pretender-type, or a Beast Warrior-type? Is her "Sari Sumdac" form just an organic shell, or does she transform from "human" to robot?
Ahh...if you only liked Primus, she could turn into a key for Cybertron, and basically be the "best Powermaster EVAR!". Meh. On second thought.
Hmm...could've sworn something was said along the lines of one factor being that OS came up a little late in some fashion. Oh well. He and the Constructicons will just have to wait and hope for official toy existence someday.
I would really like to have done some aliens too, but there is just never enough time/episodes.
I was pretty happy with how the stained glass came out. It is interesting to theorize about the meanings contained in them.
I'm not sure about trade. The Autobots seem very isolationist. They are not even allowed to go near any organic world. On the flip side though, I'm sure the Decepticons have colonies on a few conquered worlds...
I would guess that Ratchet had to operate on Sari with a combination of organic surgery, and some mechanical repair. You'd have to ask Marty to get the real story there though.
I would draw the Sharkticons like round Pacman balls with huge teeth, and tiny arms and legs. Pretty similar to the classic versions. Obsidian would be cool too.
Commissions are not looking good for April. Too busy. Way too busy.
1. I think the hope is that Sari will eventually learn to control her power.
2. No. Obsidian would be Obsidian.
3. I don't think the Pretender analogy works. Sari is Techno organic in both modes.
Anyone but me notice the size difference between protoform Sari and the protoforms in the Five Servos episode? She was tiny in comparison. Why? Possible Minicon prototype? We have to find out more about why she was on earth in the first place at some point or else there is no justice.
Maybe her protoform was kind of a "Maximal Upgrade" sort of thing to conserve energon, after all Teletran-1 was stingy with it before when they could have used Omega Supreme....or maybe it was supposed to be like the "Cassette" transformers.
So the autobots like to isolate themselves... I think that just shows that maybe they're not a perfect society; which has already been validated time and time again in animated. I meam a lot of societies that had isolated themselves or walled themselves in; preventing new ideas from the outside world from coming in have had their cultures and nations crumble. The outside world develops faster than they can, because the nations around them can trade technology and ideas. Hence the isolated nation is destroyed when those other nations come knocking. I think this just shows that the Cybertronian nation if that's what we can call them has some inherent weaknesses.
Its a great episode Mr. Wyatt. I got to see great characterization of Optimus Prime, and even some development from Sentinel.
Another thing I liked about this episode was the development of Wasp. Wasp seems to be more dangerous and competent than his Beast Wars counterpart and that I think makes him better. I just feel it becomes a real injustice to a character to destroy that character's potential for the sake of a bit of comedy. I felt it was a shame that he wasn't portrayed as competent and funny at the same time. And I kind of felt sorry for Wasp during Beast Wars and Beast Machines, so I am glad that his newest incarnation seems to be better developed and more interesting.
Although....
After watching "Predacons rising" I started thinking that aren't the Animated Dinobots really weak?
They've gotten their butts kick so often. They where beaten by Bulkhead, the twins and treated like pawns by Black Arachnia etc. Somehow I think they need to be developed a bit more. I'm also a fan of the Dinobots in a way. Not the biggest fan, but as they are now,I think they're just becoming cannon fodder and uninteresting characters. These are just my opinions. Its just the way I'm starting see things, that's all.
That saying.. I cant wait for next episode. Thanks for a great episode Mr. Wyatt. :) I can't wait for Sari's return. Its been a while, I've been wondering about how she is. I'm also excited to see all of Optimus' Autobot family be reunited.
I really liked "Predacons Rising" as well... great mix of funny and creepy going on there.
As in, watching the Jet Twins trash the Dinobots I found to be funny (and cheerworthy... heh), not to mention Sentinel's... interesting manner of transportation. And pretty much everything with Wasp in this episode was creepy. He somehow both makes me feel really sorry for him *and* scares the crap out of me.
On a side note, Sentinel's utterly hateful reaction to BlackArachnia (which kind of tipped him over the line from "funny jackass" to just "pure jackass" for me) makes me wonder how Jazz and the Jet Twins would have reacted to Sari... maybe it's best she took a breather for a few eps. :/
Wait, does anybody know if there is going to be a season 4? Not only do I hope so, but I think there were some loose ends from season two and a few from season three that need to be tied up.

My interview with Unicron himself went more like this:
Unicron: I HUNGER!
DJW: Me too. Hungry.
Unicron: DO YOU PREFER TO EAT A CITY INHABITED BY ROBOTS, OR PIE?
DJW: Pie. Rhubarb, if they have it.
Unicron: NOW I TOO HUNGER FOR PIE. OR MAYBE SOME CREPES OR SOMETHING.
DJW: Well then, proceed on your way to oblivion!
Unicron: YES, INDEED. WAIT, WHAT!?!?
DJW: Thanks for making Galvatron, he's way cooler than Megatron. Bye!
em derrick this is ..... AWSOME!!!
UNICORN IS HUNGRY ! EVERYBODY RUN FOR YOUR LIVES ! dont stop posting cool stuff because we cant get enough of it ! thanks derrick :)
Is that drawing seriously what Ani Unicron would look like? :P
XD at the interview with "real" Unicron...

Nimoy Galvatron.

Thaaank you.
So sad that we won't be seeing much more Oil Slick and Cyclonus. *pout*

Wasn't the location where Blurr was killed in, the Elite Guard Headquarters?
... So the key fulfilled its role
... chibi hungry Unicron is the most adorable thing I've ever seen.
Neat interview, though! It's interesting to see your perspective on the events of S3, and some of those details like prop animation, or the origins of some characters.
will we be seeing sari agian soon ? im starting to miss her :(
'Yep. It's a total Fortress.'
Did I misunderstand? Are we going to see Fort Max?
And is Omega no longer the Autobots' 'Last line of Defence?'
Oops, missed some Q's.
No Skids, sorry.
Sari will be return in "Human Error."
TRANSFORMERS, *ROBOTS EATING PIES*
I have a question.
Brawn, Spittor, and Cyclonus did not have speaking roles in Transwarped. Were they ever cast with voice actors, and if so, who are they?
"But we won't see the Decepticon off world colonies this season."
You're not hinting at other possible seasons, are you, Derrick?
So bummed we won't be hearing Judd Nelson again!
About the Decepticon colonies - do we ever get to see Scorponok Base and Trypticon City?

Surgery on Sari...did Ratchet have to cut her up? :(
Surgery on Sari...did Ratchet have to cut her up? :(
Think more along the lines of hot wiring.
....? This seems to be becoming a versus thread with Sari versus ?.
:)
Hopefully we get updated on her current condition quickly.
Mr. Wyatt will we see other races like the Vok, the Swarm,Quintessons etc. in Animated? How would you design them? What would they be like?
Will we see Meltdown in Animated again?
None of those guys show up in season 3. It would be a lot of fun to design them though.

If Mr. Wyatt takes up one of my comission ideas, I tossed a few ideas at him that involved the Quintesson Scientist, Inquirata, or the Sharkticons.
So, we'll just have to see if he even has time for it...would be very awesome to see Derrick's version of either.
1) For Ratchet rewiring Sari -

I meam a lot of societies that had isolated themselves or walled themselves in; preventing new ideas from the outside world from coming in have had their cultures and nations crumble. The outside world develops faster than they can, because the nations around them can trade technology and ideas. Hence the isolated nation is destroyed when those other nations come knocking. I think this just shows that the Cybertronian nation if that's what we can call them has some inherent weaknesses.
Well, just an opinion.
Mr. Wyatt.
Wyatt. :)
I can't wait for Sari's return. Its been a while, I've been wondering about how she is. I'm also excited to see all of Optimus' Autobot family be reunited.
PS. Waspinator really has become a really really interesting antagonist. A bit creepy, scary and driven; a great antagonist for animated. :)
Now that you have posted bust images of a couple of the heads from the dojo are you going to post the rest?
Dude I gotta ask, was Bludgeon in the dojo along with Heavy-Load and Springer? Everyone says hes there but I can't make it out.
Speaking of Springer, can you post him with his whole body posed? I'm from the TFW Boards and I would love to have that as a sig
Wait, does anybody know if there is going to be a season 4? Not only do I hope so, but I think there were some loose ends from season two and a few from season three that need to be tied up.
