AWESOME!
Really hyped about this.

but who is the Autobot Elite bot and his block headed friend above megatron. At first I thought it was Ultra Magnus (due to it kinda looking like the G1 UM cheast piece) but its not is it.

Mystery bots build the excitement

Man, I can't wait to see this Saturday. Why in the world is this wonderful showing being cancelled? If I had to choose between this or ROTF I easily would choose this. Animated has proven to not only be a great cartoon but also G1 for today's youth.

Oh sweet Goddess, is that Trailbreaker I see behind Ultra Magnus or is that just my fangirly hopes?

And yes~ Cliffjumper makes his return! :D

And Oil Slick and Cyclonus.

And to think this special is happening in the same week as the release of MadWorld....

All I need now are my 3 most desired characters to show up and my life is set.

My only gripe is that it's premiering at 8 in the morning. That's what is known as the Saturday morning death slot and more often than not, shows at that time slot don't do so good ratings wise. (Although technically Transwarped is 3 episodes but you get my point)

Loving all the diffused color light effects. I'm assuming you guys got a bigger budget or just found out how to get more bang for your buck? Beautiful images - To rival any 2D animation I have ever seen!

You know what would rule? If you guys did an epic direct to video action flick - War Within/Stormbringerish in scope and scale - but PG and totally in this ass-kicking style.

Just looking at these images, it's just so epic - I hope that your fantastic team can put out some dvd movies en el futuro... :)

Does Transwarped (even though it's worth 3 episodes) take up 3 episodes in the 13 episode season, or just 1? I guess what I'm asking is, after we watch the episode, will we 12 or 10 episodes left?

3:30 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey Derrick, I'm sure people ask you all the time what other TF characters from other universes you would want to be in TFA, but what TFA character(s) would you want to see appear in another series/universe?

11:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Derrick, as you worked on some of the character designs I had a question for you:

How come Ratchet, who fought in the Great War is depicted as old, while Lockdown, who appears in his flashbacks is not? And what about Megatron? Everyone assumes that he started the war, did he attempt to rule the galaxy from his Cybertronian cradle?

Aside from that, totally stoked for the season. It's a shame that it might be the last, but as long as it's awesome I can deal with it. :)

5:36 AM
Blogger antarctic said...

Shawn:

According to Derrick's last comment under the Ratbat entry (http://derrickjwyatt.blogspot.com/2009/02/meanwhile-in-belfry.html, two entries ago), "Transwarped" will be the first three episodes of the 13-episode season, so there'll be 10 episodes after it.

Derrick....

Cyclonus is a bit of a doomsayer yes?

Constantly talking about the end times?

So...

May I ask...

IS UNICRON COMING?

that bot next next to strika looks kinda like oil slicks vehickle mode...

3:36 PM
Blogger Derrick J. Wyatt said...

Hey, that's an awesome question. I would love to see Bulkhead and Lugnut turn up in other continuities.

I think Ratchet has just let himself get warn out. He doesn't replace his damages anymore, and as a consequence, he looks older. Lockdown continually upgrades himself, replacing damaged parts. I'm not sure if Megatron started the war, or was the first Decepticon leader.

Cyclonus's predictions are dire. It's almost like he's seen what will happen in the future first hand. But no Unicron in season three.

4:30 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Man, now I'm really hoping we get Spittor, Cyclonus, Blackout and Strika toys along with anyone else in S3 that transforms. But mostly them, because I missed out on the first Strika's toy.

And could your commenting on Cyclonus be some thinly veiled foreshadowing Mr. Wyatt? Hmmmm?

Excellent episodes! Unfortunately, YTV left me out in the lurch with regards to Part III, but the stuff I've seen so far rocks! Rodimus FTW, and Perceptor's voice was odd but excellent.

And please tell me, from one honorary member of the Dai-Gurren to another, was the Sari transformation sequence, specifically with regards to her arms and legs, a reference to the Gurren Lagann combining sequence?

Thought the episode was fantastic! The only thing I didn't like was Perceptor's voice. I couldn't really understand what he was saying.

2:28 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay, who's idea was it to have Perceptor voiced by Microsoft Sam or whatever program you used? I know there's a limit as to how many voice actors you guys can use but seriously, isn't that a little too cheap? Or was it more of a nod towards Steven Hawking?

I kinda liked Perceptor's digitized voice, though at first when I heard it I muttered to myself "Who the [censored] is that?" and kinda chuckled when I saw it was Perceptor I laughed a little because it kinda suited him. But please tell me that we'll get to see more of Strika's group.

Gee golly, that was rather dark in places. Which was nice really, compared to how 'kiddy-friendly' some cartoons are these days.

But man, poor Blurr!
(I saw no gray-ness, though. That's a good thing right??)

11:44 PM
Blogger Lynda R said...

Very nice. Loved all of the fan service, of course. You even managed to get some dramatic moments in there, with Sari almost killing one of her best friends (Bumblebee). Good stuff.

I'm not looking forward to the end. *sigh*

12:35 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow. Transwarped was great! The whole Blurr running across the rings of Saturn was such a beautiful shot. I am thinking of making it my desk top. Blurr cannot be dead! He simply cannot!

Love the dark direction the series is taking though. Sari basically offing Bumblebee...wow that was intense.

Was Sari's upgraded robot mode inspired by "My Life as a Teenage Robot?" They look similar.

12:38 AM
Blogger Kookaburra said...

So, was Blurr's demise a Pheidippides shout out? The running buff in me wants it to be.

When I start spring training I know I'm going to be humming Blurr's epic race theme to myself.

2:11 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm hoping Blurr found a way out but part of him got stuck and crushed in that compactor, because Blurr was one of my favorite characters, as well as the favorite to others, and we'd be so devastated if he was really dead.

And what about Rodimus Prime's team? Are they okay???

3:58 AM
Blogger Shawn said...

I really enjoyed Strika! Tara Strong did a good voice for her, and I kind of like the idea of her being the stereotypical Russian General. I especially liked it when she said "Fallback, on the double!" I love Vehicons, and I'm glad at least 2 could make it into animated. It's really nice to see them in another continuity. I hope Hasbro makes a toy of Strika, that would be AWESOME!

8:24 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, I thought Perceptor's voice kinda suited him because when he talked, it sounded very much like a computer wrote his dialouge with how incredibly technical he was. And now in animated, he literally sounds like a computer on multiple levels. Was this the intent of his new voice?

10:47 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh my lord. Shockwave KILLS Blurr, rendering him to an unsalvageable cube. He's the best goddamned baddie in the show.

Seriously, I would not want to mess with him, he's one scary sod.

Are Megatron's initial team (Blitzwing, Lugnut, Blackarachnia and Starscream) a kind of decepticon elite guard, or just a bunch of 'cons that Megs has managed to scrounge together?

Oh, by the way, Sari's HAAAWWWTT

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Just when I thought TFA couldn't get any better, Transwarped comes along and proves me wrong...

One of the strongest features of Animated IMO has always been it's innovative takes on well-established (and not-so-well-established) characters. One thing this episode really brings home is how the Animated Autobots seem a lot more battle-hardened, one might say even brutally pragmatic, than those from previous franchises. It is impossible to see G1 Optimus, for example, making or even approving of any of the command decisions Ultra Magnus makes during Ratchet's flashbacks. Can you tell us a bit more about this portrayal, especially who was behind the idea and their reasoning for it?

10:21 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Loved the new designs in this episode. Really interesting and varied with some nice homages to past series. Here's hoping for an animated Cyclonus toy in the future.

Derrick, I'm curious about Red Alert's - was the character designed with a toy in mind or is she intended to be a screen-only character? I'd love to see how Hasbro could pull off her transformation between robot mode and ambulance.

1:13 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay, don't answer this if it's important later:

Is Sari like a Beast Warrior, or a Pretender?

So, we've got a robot mode and a possible vehicle/beast mode.

Is the laser blader form just an upgraded form of whatever the "Sari Sumdac" form is, or did she unlock her transformation sequence? Or even her "remove Pretender shell" sequence?

Is the "Sari Sumdac" form her "Beast" form, or her "Robot" form?

If this isn't "important", but does appear later; any hints on what Sari's "other" form is?

Mostly a "me too" on several of the preceding comments:
-- Loved the overall characterization, plot, scripting and animation.
-- Pleasantly surprised at how dark this episode got without overstepping the bounds of content aimed at Animated's younger target audience.
-- Despite that, a little shocked at Blurr's apparent demise, especially after he made such a spectacular effort to get back home. (I'm not about to complain over physics violations in a cartoon about transforming alien robots, so long as it's self-consistent.) Similarly surprised at Sari's unwilling attack on Bumblebee; I wasn't sure how drastically it would be depicted.
-- Extremely pleased at all the characterization for Ratchet stemming from the events in "Thrill of the Hunt", which I feel remains one of the pinnacles (if not the pinnacle) of writing for the series.
-- Tickled at all the previous continuity references for us older fans, worked in so new viewers wouldn't have to understand them to enjoy the show. I'm hoping most of those new faces/voices get more development over the remainder of the season, but it may be at the expense of fringe characters from the last two seasons, so it's a tough choice.
-- Amused by Perceptor's voice, but also had trouble understanding some of his lines. I'll have to listen through those scenes again. (Oh, darn...)
-- Surprised and intrigued by the partial revelation of Sari's origins. Some of the mystery is explained, but questions still remain to be resolved during the season. (That's assuming they aren't left open at season's end on purpose, as hooks to get later material produced once the focus on this year's movie is over.)

In short, kudos all around (and what the heck, KudosĀ® as well) for a job well done. I'm looking forward to subsequent episodes eagerly...almost hungrily, one might say.

Oh my goodness I loved Transwarp! Grand job. You and the team should be very proud of yourselves. I loved the Sari robot design she just was so darn cute~! I digged her cute tiny little wingy-dingies, if she grew up and those became full fledged awesome looking wings I'd squeal in a very distinctive fangirlish way.

P.s. That protoform had better not have come from Megatron because he'd be really owing a lot of back pay for the child support. God the things you come up with at four A.M.

Even though Blurr wasn't on the list of characters that I really liked, him getting smushed into a cube was big. Though at the same time, he was like that chick in the slasher films you yell at to "not go in there" if you catch my drift. In the end I was caught between "See I told you not to go in there, now you're dead, that'll teach you." and "Oh that poor guy just got smushed." and this is coming from the Decepticon biased chick. Big standing ovation for you guys for pulling that off.

Well I got to go now, stay awesome.

I love the design for Cybertron, it looks so damn pretty. Was that yours or someone else's, Derrick?

Any chance of getting that as a higher resolution image/wallpaper or something? I'd dig that for a forum signature or desktop.

Awesome episode, all round. Art, story and sound wise... but if you chat to Susan Blu, tell her that Perceptor's voice was incomprehensible at times. It's a good idea, but it needs to be toned down a little.

Anyway, some Cybertron art would be awesome :D

I was overjoyed to see Mainframe, especially with how close he was to the original design. I've got my Action Master version standing right by the television!

Ah, that was a great way to kick off the season. TransWarped was all around great, with the battle at the beginning and all. I'm hoping to see more of Roddy and his team, they were all pretty cool. And Team Chaar.
I love the look of Sari's new robot mode! I think she looks a bit better with the mask on though. Can't wait to see more about her origin.
...The only thing about Blurr's death I can feel is shock and sadness. I realize he only appeared in 3 episodes (4 if you get technical) but he was a cool character and really had a moment to shine and be awesome with that run through space. It's awful what Shockwave did to him, and now I want Shockwave dead (of course, I want to see if he wipes the floor with Magnus first). I would've liked Shockwave better if he hadn't done that to Blurr. RIP, Blue Racer.
Cool to see all of Ratchet's flashbacks, but Perceptor's voice needs some work. Also wanting to see what Megatron and Starscream will do next... and to see Jetfire and Jetstorm! I'm looking forward to seeing the twins on the show. Can't wait until 'Three's a Crowd'!
