Great interview Derrick! Thanks for taking the time and offering us this interview.

From the bottom of my heart I mean it when I say we are very blessed to have you come forward do Transformers: Animated for us. You grew up on G1 Transformers and when I have kids or when I'm older I'll tell them I grew up on Beast Wars and Transformers: Animated. I absolutely love the designs that you've created.

Keep up the great work my friend! Happy Holidays :)

I found the interview very interesting and I loved the artwork for Kickback. One question, though I don't know if you're allowed to answer, did Kickback's design influence Waspinator's toy design?

So I see Ratbat is high on your list of favorites...but you've also said that you don't accept the comic Ratbat.

So really, how did he become a favorite of yours?

Weird! Why the TFA Derrick looks NOTHING like G1 Derrick, Derrick?

And an excellent interview it is too. Nice Kickback design there.

Can't wait to see Season 3 bots like Rodimus and Warpath.

I want to say cheers for your influence in keeping many of the characters true to their old selves, Derrick. It's part of what makes Animated so awesome for the older fans.

PS I'm sure character requests get annoying, but I can't help myself :P More combaticons would be awesome! IMHO, they have interesting modes and great personalities. Particularly Swindle (of course), Onslaught and Brawl.

Animated Derrick has an insignia I have never seen before, is it perhaps his own faction of fleshlings?! Did he become Mayor of The Transfandom? Maybe, it's always fun to wonder. Nice interview by the way, always nice to know someone who genuinely loves the franchise got to work in it.

I'd also think the Combaticons would be awesome, but I think it'd be awesome to get an Animated Devastor. Imagine how much oil it'd take to keep him happy if Scrapper and Mixmaster seem like they can drink twice their weight in it.

When do we see Bombshell?! He was always my favorite Insecticon...

Thanks for the nice comments everyone!

Waspinator was designed before Kickback. So, it's kind of the other way around. Waspinator and Blackarachnia had influence on Kickback's design.

I always loved the cassette animals, and bats are some of my all time favorite animals. Plus he's purple. Purple cassette bat = win. I also liked him being used as a spy in the cartoon, and I like that he would drink the fuel out of cars (and I imagine Autobots) in his original Tech Specs. I also just like there being the distinction of the animal robot form characters being more animal like.

That symbol is from the Wyatt Toys division of Sumdac Systems.

I don't know about Bombshell. I'm not even sure if they have that name anymore. The latest release of that character is called Hardshell.

I assumed it had something to do with Wyatt Toys since it looked like a "W"(and it's Animated Derrick) though it's not really surprising that Sumdac Systems has a branch for Toy Manufacturing now that I think about it. But I figured someone would get a nice chuckle with some off guesses.

In that interview you mentioned you liked the Beast Wars versions of Inferno and Rampage more, that mean if Hasbro feels like releasing toys in the Animated Line under those names we will most likely have new toys our favorite psychos(excluding Tarantulas) from the Beast Era?

Hey Derrick, I've got a question, however, it could be either far too stupid or too freaking good so prepare yourself!

In the Derrick Animation model, the date of shipping, is it, 12/10 as in DECEMBER TENTH or as in OCTOBER TWELVE?

4:50 AM
Blogger Derrick J. Wyatt said...

If we did Rampage or Inferno, it would be my preference to base them on the Beast characters. Maybe with Cybertron forms instead of beast modes. Like Wasp.

Those model sheets are put together in the US, so the date is December 10.

9:35 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh so the model is veeeery early.

Anyway, another question that maybe you can't answer, but, do you know how long it actualy takes to animate a single 22 minute episode? Is it a matter of weeks? Days?

5:32 PM
Blogger Derrick J. Wyatt said...

From start to finish it takes about 6 months.

So, does Sumdac Systems own Wyatt Toys?

This is a kind of random Question I know but it kind of strikes me as odd that you guys would choose characters such as Hot Shot and Cyclonus since it seems that with their universe versions the likelyhood of Animated toys of these characters seems pretty slim or was this something that hasbro actually requested that you include characters that wouldnt 'need' toys but if a kid wanted to go buy a Cyclonus or Hot Shot they could albiet ones that dont really fit in with the animated line.

Maybe im just in a negative mood but all these new characters in season 3 are somewhat bittersweet imo as it seems unrealistic that we will get toys for them all.

I just wanted to ask you something: Is ANimated Wreck-Gar's color scheme and alt-mode based on both the original Wreck-Gar and the Gobot Fly Trap? It's just a theory of mine, so I'd like to see some confirmation.

We need a British Botcon.

Mr. Derrick Wyatt, can you post some sketches of some the '86 characters (Springer, Kup, & Wheelie)

12:23 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I like that Kickback. That'd be awesome to show up, although the most visually interesting of all the Insecticons was Shrapnel. He totally needed a Cybertron version of him from the old Scarem mold, it'd work perfectly with the old Jungle Planet appearance :/

Of course I'd love a Decepticon nerd in Animated. Just because he would be hilarious in fiction

I hope your Animated self as well as Mr. Isenberg make a cameo in the series. I mean if Bruce Timm and Paul Dini can do it, I hope you can.

Also, when is Season 3 starting, beacuse Season 2 reruns of Animated are coming to a close? I hope it's during Febuary. I wished CN did more promotion for Animated. They air Animated when everyone is asleep.

8:55 AM

Seriously david23 the only way he would be able to post sketches of said characters is if there was absolutely no intention of them ever appeaing in Animated....

Season 3 starts in Spring beyond that I doubt Derrik is in a position to give anything more specific and thats even assuming he knows anything more specific....

5:31 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thank you Mr. Anonymous for clearing that up. I appreciate it. Well, Mr. Wyatt I just want to say that your doing a great job with Transformers Animated and you've inspired me with your art. Keep up the good work!

They will make an appearance...you can see the episode ref in the corner...

Blogger Derrick J. Wyatt said...

Eric and I designed the characters so that even if Universe was making a toy of the same character, ours would be different enough that there wouldn't be a problem. Having said that however, there are just way too many new characters to be produced as toys in one year. Only time will tell how many end up getting made.

Animated Wreck-Gar's colors don't come from Fly Trap, but that is a pretty cool coincidence.

I would go to a British Botcon!

We haven't been given an official air date for season 3 yet.

Oh Wyatt! You're so unfair wiht yourself in that animation model!

You're not THAT fat or bald! Also, is it just me or the face looks VERY similar to Mumbo Jumbo in your avatar?

8:49 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh my, I didn't notice the similarity between Animated Derrik and the Waldorf-esque Mumbo in his avitar. *chuckle* That's rather amusing.

And you guy's don't even know when Season 3 airs? Bummer, but....I guess that's sort of comforting in a way, kinda like Optimus Prime not knowing where his trailer goes either.

Hey Derrick you might not know this but I might as well ask, whats up with Oilslicks Redesign from his Comic appearance to what he looks like in the TFCC

2:49 PM
Blogger Derrick J. Wyatt said...

Remember TV adds 10 pounds! Yeah, that's the Mumbo version of me from the all Mumbo episode of Teen Titans.

The Oilslick seen in the recent TFCC is the design we are using in the show.

Are you good friends with cartoon writers and artist outside Animated?

Which voice actor(s) would you like to have in Animated?

What do you think of Revenge o the Fallen? Do you think it might influence Animated?

Just picked up the Season 2 DVD pack, Derrick, and enjoyed the two episodes of commentary. I wish there had been more, of course, as it's always fun to hear creators' impressions and/or behind-the-scenes info, but I realize work schedules only allow so much time for extra activities like this.

Looking forward to season 3!

Mr. Wyatt, is there going to be action figures for the humans, such as Sari, Captain Fanzone, and the S.U.V.? Maybe they could be in a set or something..I really like how you designed them, they deserve to action figures. I'm just wondering...

7:53 PM
Blogger ayellowbirds said...

I'm also interested to see how Revenge of the Fallen may influence design decisions...

I'm excited to the point of squealing by every new character design. Is there any chance we'll see some of the characters exclusive to the American and UK comics showing up? I'm thinking in particular of Flame, Scrounge, Drift, and especially Maccadam.

Bumblebee's comments to Wasp and Cliffjumper's appearance suggest that their basic form is a fairly common one. Does 'Bee have the Autobot equivalent of an "average joe" physique? I get the mental image of crowds on Cybertron with guys like Hubcap and Bumper filling the gaps as stock crowd characters.

4:42 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hello there Mr. Wyatt.

Will the cartoon show more of the autobots training to improve themselves aside from the Bulkhead training to be more graceful and Sari and Prowl on the conveyor belt? I also think that the prepartions they've been going to isn't enough. What about Optimus, Ratchet and Bumblebee's preparation.

Because sometimes it seems the autobots are able to defeat supposedly well trained decepticon soldiers by luck or some unknown move like what Prowl did to his stasis cuffs. And I find that the autobots on earth seem kind of carefree, knowing that they could get killed fighting Decepticons yet not doing any preparations for their inevitable battle.

Shouldn't the autobots on earth be concerned for their safety, be preparing themselves for battle and gathering resources to fight the Decepticons?

Hiya Derrick! :)

I was curious on your background in art. Did you ever go into art school? Or were you self-taught?

Because I don't have the money to go to art school and it would be a dream job to do work in the animation industry. Any advice or tips?

Thanks!

I like the idea of a Cybertronian mode Inferno making a cameo in Animated you came up with, Derrick. Reminds me of my theory/idea of an Autobot version of Rattrap with an exterminator's van as an alt-mode.

Also since you've been trying to work in Octopunch, what role would you like him to assume? Would he be another failed experiment by Meltdown like the other two "Pretenders", a fellow transformer, or a seperate entity altogether?

9:40 PM
Blogger Derrick J. Wyatt said...

I wish we could have done more commentary too, but I am happy we got to do any at all.

I haven't seen anymore of Revenge of the Fallen than any of you guys have.

There do seem to be a lot of characters that share the same protoform mold as Bumblebee on Cybertron.

I went to the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic art.

Interesting human designs. Quite a bit different than what I did.

No ideas please, we are not allowed to use them.

I'm not sure what Octopunch would have been. Marauding monster? Mad scientist experiment gone wrong?

12:07 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Haha! Derrick, about the whole "no ideas please" thing, did you ever read an idea on the Internet that made think "Rats! Why didn't I think of that before?!"?

5:04 AM
Blogger Derrick J. Wyatt said...

Ha ha. Not really.

11:18 AM

Hey Mr. Wyatt, So what about the action figures of the human characters?

1:55 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey Mr. Wyatt, This is the guy who asked about if Hasbro felt like dropping the names Inferno and Rampage in the Animated line. I'm curious about two things that aren't really big, but just wondering if you guys gave any thought to them.
1) Would the Protoform Molds(I liked the idea, so congrats who came up with it) have various designations? Like some are used for Mass-Produced Autobots/Decepticons and would some have unique molds designed to be the leaders of their factions like Megatron or Ultra Magnus?
2) Since the Decepticons are exiled from Cybertron, does that mean they are cut off the ability to build more 'cons? Or do they have a planet conquered somewhere were they can build more units for their army?

3:00 PM
Blogger Derrick J. Wyatt said...

I would love TFA human figures, but that's really a question for Hasbro.

There are some protoform molds that are used to mass produce bots, and probably some that are used fewer times or just once. I would guess that the Bumblebee/Cliffjumper/Wasp/etc. mold was a popular fuel efficient post war model.

And you are right, without the Allspark and access to protoforms, the Decepticons can not add to their ranks, accept by more nefarious and unnatural means like cloning.

1.)If you asked to make a new techno organic transformer for animated, what animal would be he/she's alt mode?

2.)Why do transformers have teeth?

3.)How long does it take you to design a new transformer?

5.)Do cybertronians age?
