ratbat...cool, but wouldn't it be more practical that his alt mode was a vehicle [car, tank, whatever] or even a weapon like a sonic disruptor or such, but a musical instrument... soundwave just isn't scary or intimidating anymore, sorry.

I can only hope you find it in your heart to design a set of instruments (Ravage-oboe/piana, Rumble as a drumset and Frenzy as a saxophone, those dinosaurs as...something, I don't know), and convince Hasbro to release them as a Legends-class "Mini-Con set".

For Example: According to the first Soundwave's toy bio, Laserbeak can hack computer acoustically.

Why was he ever called Ratbat? Isn't he just a bat? And don't all bats kind of look like rats with wings? Kind of?
That's a good question. His name isn't quite as cool as Mindwipe or Hellbat. Then again, how can you beat Hellbat for coolness?
Maybe it has something to do with his nature, or maybe they just liked it because it rhymes?
Soundwave has a keytar, huh? The fans were already comparing him to Mic Sounders. Not that that's a bad thing.

I've got another question for you; With the first Soundwave figure, I understand that the Animated TV show team wasn't aware Laserbeak was being designed for the toy, whic was why he wasn't on the show with Soundwave. With Ratbat, did you guys design him and then the toy was made, or was it another case like Laserbeak?
Mr Wyattm I have to agree witha previous person. Your rendition of the transformers is better than g1 in my opinion. I grew up and loving it but as i've grown, it was very inconsistant and didn;t make much sense. Even the movie, with all the amazing cg effects, the story was horrible and did not make sense. My hates off to you an a wonderful show. I truly hope this is not the last season. Also, any word on an officialy list of the new characters on the show?

I loved Ratbat's Marvel version - he's basically a glorified Con accountant. Instead of fusion cannons and null rays, he became leader of the Decepticons with fuel efficiency charts and QC sessions... you gotta admire his tenacity.
Must say, ever since you dropped a hint that Ratbat might be in animated I was thinking he'll be Powell's custom-built transformer, seeing as how Powell is pretty much like Marvel Ratbat in human form - and the colors Headmaster uses are pretty much Ratbat's colors.

I understand that many people love the 'musical instrument' designs for soundwaves minions. I believe they detract from the character of both SW and his cassettes, not improve upon them. just an opinion. Were there any other options for alt modes other than musical instruments. [animal to weapon?, animal to vehicle?]

Maybe Frenzy and Rumble could be amplifiers, Buzzbeak a repaint and I want to say Ravage as bass, but I don't see how that would work. A drum? A drum kit? It's a conundrum!

Bleh. You are entitled to your opinion, but I feel like Soundwave animals with vehicle alt modes just totally misses the point. To me, those would just not be the same characters anymore. I am all for updates and changes, but updates need to pay respect to the roots of the character. Especially if it's a character I have nostalgia for.
Don't worry, we've had lots of different ideas for the other former cassettes. Everything you have mentioned is along the lines of things we had already been thinking about.

Again awesome designs, loving the Soundblaster homage, he was one my favourite characters in Headmasters. Ever thought of maybe like keeping Soundwave as a car, but a car that can play cassettes, that way it’d be modern, but keep the to routes of the original characters. So just wandering when can we see an official image of Animated Cyclonus? It just seems kind of weird that we see all these images of everyone else but not him...

Derrick, I know this may not be the place to ask the following question, but I can't help it (pardon me!). Did Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force inspire the development of Captain Fanzone in any shape or form?

Everything you have mentioned is along the lines of things we had already been thinking about." wouldnt this be redundant since from whats been flying around the net and the virtual absense of Animated product shown at toyfair it seems that season 3 is the end of the Animated cartoon and perhaps worse that very few of the new characters in season 3 will even get toys.
And no Im not fishing ive simply accepted that due to a combination of unfortunate factors the best TF toon/toyline in a long time is coming to a premature end so I find it odd that you would say something that implies even the possibility that additional cassetteformers would even be a possibility
While i can understand your being annoyed with s250 for releasing what he has you have to admit the hasbro/CN have really mishandled Animated at this point I mean the rumours surrouding the shows future have been around for a while and they have made no attempt to address the issue and not showing any Animated product at toyfair has fueled the fire so to speak so really id say a bunch of season 3 designs and spoilers being leaked are the least of the problems surrounding animated at the moment.
How does that s250 guy get away with leaking such images to the public anyway? Two of those images are pretty big plot spoilers from the looks of it.
I do like that one character design though. (Not going to get into it here since Derrick probably doesn't want to/can't talk about it here)
I'm guessing the s250 guy works at the animation factory you guys use to deal with the inbetweening seeing as all the images seem to be control art and he seems to know story points too.
You should try sending something through to trip them up. Although I'm guessing at this stage its pretty much all done at thier end.

Okay Mr. Wyatt. Short time viewer, first time commentor(commenter? Gosh I can't spell words right to save my life!) Anyway, yeah I just saw Transformers Animated for the first time at six in the morning on Cartoon Network when I had to get up early to take my brother to the bus stop. I was really intregued (again, not sure of the spelling) and so I proceeded to watch the rest of the series and I was very impressed. As I was describing to another friend of mine, "it is the most adorable, kick-ass show ever."
Anyway, I wanted to know if you saw the "Ocean's Three and a Half" Family Guy episode last Sunday. Cause it featured a cameo by a Megatron who looked awefully like his TF:A incarnate. I was kinda tickled by that because in another episode, they show Optimus Prime in one of his older incarnations. Oldly enough, that one time they spoofed Optimus Prime, he was Jewish. Will that little known part of Optimus' life make an appearance in season three? Maybe a holiday special? Hum?
Any way, I can't wait for season three! I check regularly, but do you have any release dates yet?
Now all we need is Rumble and Frenzy to combine into a drum set and we'll be in good shape. Also throw in Buzzsaw turns into a bass and Ravage into a keyboard.
this is my first comment here but I've been following the blog for a while as I've been a fan of yer work since Teen Titans. Butt kissing aside I'm happy to see one of my favorite cassette cons being given the animated treatment. Also glad yer sticking to his g1 incarnation cuz in the comics he went from being a simple minion of a minioon to being full blown leader of the cons.
As for future version of the rest of the cassette cons rumble and frenzy as a drum set is perfect my only question is will you perpetuate the frenzy rumble miscoloration or use the "correct" ones :). Buzzsaw being a bass is also perfect since it compliments laserbeaks form. I agree with another poster that ravage should be an amp or something the keyboard angle is a nice thought but with ratbat already being a keytar it would be a lil redundant.
As for the purists whining about soundwaves no longer being a tape deck people really need to get over that. Making him a van is pretty logical as it avoids the need for ludicrous size morphing. Plus lets be honest here who the heck even uses a tape deck anymore in least of all in a uber high tech detroit?
What everyone's forgetting is that Soundwave IS still a tapedeck.
Just one that has wheels, is larger, and replaced the tapedeck with a CD player.
I might go to Botcon. I had a great time last year. Plus I think Trent Troop is supposed to buy me another Action Master.
Who knows what is possible. I'm just saying that those ideas (and others) have been discussed.
I don't think I can say anything about the Botcon set. Other than I wasn't involved in this one, but I will be buying it.
I didn't see that Family Guy. They still haven't given us a start date for season 3 airing yet. I'm hoping there will be a launch event.

Just been reading about the march 14th premiere of Season Three; woot woot indeed! I'm very much looking forward to the "TransWarped" TV movie in particular; you guys did an awesome job with "Transform and Roll Out", and I'm delighted that we'll be seeing another feature-length story before the series concludes.
One question, though; does "TransWarped" count as part of the 13 episodes scheduled for Season Three? If so, does it count as one or three episodes? Just that "Transform and Roll Out" was separate from the first 13-episode season, and I was kind of hoping the same would be true of this movie; it would give as an additional one (or even three!) episodes to look forward to...
Whatever the case, anticipation begins now!

I have a question. Since the Universe line seems to be showcasing characters from all the various Transformer continuities, and since it already includes Animated characters in its Legends size class, is it possible that when Animated ends (whenever that may be -- no series lasts forever, after all), we may still see Animated characters in the Universe toyline? If so, how much input would you have on any post-TV series releases?
I have to say .. you did a terrific job Derrick! loving soundwaves new vehicle mode! , but , one question. Was it always a thing with the black, red and purple colors for the decepticons?
Transwarped is part (3 parts) of the 13 episode order. It was made to be shown as a movie or as three individual episodes.
I think that's a great idea for the Universe line! Maybe someone could suggest that to the Hasbro guys at Botcon? I would be as involved as they want me to be.

I think the idea of making Soundwave's minions into musical instruments is inspired. Rumble would be an excellent drumset ;)
But an idea that seems good, that hasn't been put out there yet, is for Slugfest (stegosaurus cassette), in the form of a synthesizer-type keyboard. Piano keys to back-plates and such.
While you clearly have a fondness, or at least respect, for Beast Wars, I'm curious how you feel about the character of Terrorsaur in particular. I recently had an idea for how to incorporate him into the Animated universe, and if you're interested I'd be glad to elaborate by E-mail :-)
